Not far from the Trevi Fountain, more than nine meters below the current street level, an excavation campaign carried out by the Archeology Superintendence of Rome, between 1999 and 20001 during the renovation of a cinema, gave rise to the discovery of a large complex of ancient buildings. Visitable since its opening in 2004, this site is a remarkable example of the archaeological stratification that extends under the Rione Trevi and which, in turn, allows us to remember some of the great events in the history of the city, from the construction of the Aqua Virgo to Nero's burning, from Alaric's sack to the Goth siege and beyond.

Vicus Caprarius is an ancient Roman residential area located below the Trevi district. It is also called the “City of Water” because it is connected to the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which supplies water to the famous Fontana di Trevi1 Vicus Caprarius was discovered in 1999 during the renovation of a former cinema. It contains the remains of an imperial domus, a water reservoir and several archaeological finds, such as the famous face of Alexander Helios.
