The sculpture, inaugurated in 1964, was created by the sculptor José Belloni. It is located in the heart of Juan Pedro Fabini Square, on Avenida 18 de Julio, between Río Negro and Julio H. y Obes, popularly known as El Entrevero Square.

The sculpture pays homage to anonymous heroes and depicts the integration of Creole, Indigenous and African American gauchos in the struggle for national independence and active participation in the fervent and ongoing pursuit of freedom. Also worth mentioning is the formation of the regiments of the Pardos and Morenos del Río de la Plata and their strategic role in the first ranks of the independence armies.
