Previously, the two harbor basins were not connected at all. The connecting canal was only created between 1926 and 1928. Instead, a lock connected the Old Harbor with the mouth of the Geeste River.

One bridge was originally built as a railway overpass, as can still be clearly seen from the embedded rails. The wider bridge served road traffic from the beginning and is now an important access point to the "Havenwelten Bremerhaven" (Bremerhaven Harbor Worlds). The ensemble, now a listed monument, was renovated in the mid-1980s.

Bascule bridges between the Old Harbor and the New Harbor
The bascule bridges, with engine houses built in clinker brick style typical of the period, connect the Old Harbor and the New Harbor.
