The Grote- or Sint Janskerk is the oldest building in Schiedam, and from the beginning it was a building by and for all Schiedammers. The church has therefore been a cultural and historical centre of the city for centuries. This year 2025 the church will be 600 years old and that will be celebrated in style.
On 5 December 1262, Lady Aleida, Countess of Holland and Hainaut, a particularly enterprising woman who gave Schiedam city rights, received permission from Hendrik, the Bishop of Utrecht, to build a church. That original church stood on the site of the current high choir and the front part of the nave.
Construction of the current Gothic church began in 1335 and was completed in 1425. Over the centuries, the church has been changed and restored many times. The last restoration was completed in 2003.
