This picturesque marina is one of the few parts of the old town that survived the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. It has a remarkable history as the place from which the Pilgrim Fathers left for America and as the birthplace of Piet Hein.

Well Nico, it's a stretch to describe old Delfshaven as a picturesque marina!
It was the port of Delft, until ships became so large that they could no longer pass through the Old Lock and the fight against the recurring sandbanks was given up in front of Delfshaven. Only when the Westzeedijk was constructed as a Deltadijk was the port of Delfshaven finally closed and a marina could be constructed in the disused part. The bombardment of May '40 was far away from Delfshaven. The 'forgotten' bombing of Bospolder and Tussendijken (450 dead and 800 wounded) was a 'near miss', because its border was no more than 250 meters further west. The rest of your comment is absolutely correct and that is why a visit to the Voorhaven and the Achterhaven is definitely worthwhile.
