The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V Z6672 ZA-Y of 10 Squadron was shot down here on 19 August 1941. The Whitley was en route to Cologne but was hit by a night fighter. The damaged aircraft nevertheless managed to drop its bombs on Aachen, Germany. After this bombing and during the return to England, the aircraft was hit a second time, this time by Oblt Heinrich Griese of 1./NJG 1. This attack proved fatal for the Whitley.

The monument stands on the Tiendenberg and was unveiled on 19 August 1999 by W/O Norman WEISER of 10 Squadron. Bagpiper Raymond BROUNS led the way to the ceremony, and F-16s from Kleine Brogel flew over the monument. The proposal for the monument came from the South Limburg WWII Remembrance Committee. Jacky COMHAIR came up with the idea of placing the RAF cockade on the monument. Sgt. Steve ROBERTS (RAF) and members of the committee built the brick monument in a beautiful location. The commemorative plaques were donated by air force personnel from Glons, and Paul DAEMEN provided the land. In May 2002, Paul, Timmy, and Dominique DAEMEN added a concrete edge to the monument to provide better protection.

On May 12, 1940, a British military aircraft crashed in Kanne, near the Dutch border. On its way back from a bombing raid on Mönchengladbach, it was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire. More: nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20190223_04199631
