The Nyatapola Temple was constructed at the Taumadhi Square in the early 18th century during the reign of King Bhupatindra Malla. The temple is one of only two five-tiered pagodas in the whole of the Kathmandu Valley, the other being Kumbheshwar Temple in Patan. The temple's sanctum enshrines Bhagawati in her specific incarnation as Taleju, a deity worshipped by the Malla kings as a protectress of the kingdom. However, the precise name of the Taleju deity worshipped here is not known with any certainty.
Nyatapola Temple survived the 1934 earthquake which levelled so many temples with damages on only the uppermost roof as well as the devastating April 2015 earthquake, though renovations extending into 2020 were needed to ensure the long-term stability of the structure.

The Nyatapola Temple, located in Bhaktapur, stands as a quintessential representation of the architectural prowess prevalent in the Kathmandu Valley during the early 18th century. This five-story edifice, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Siddhi Lakshmi, is not only a spiritual beacon but also a symbol of resilience, having endured the devastating effects of seismic activities through the centuries, most notably during the 1934 and 2015 earthquakes.
Built between 1701 and 1702 over 7 months by the king Bhupatindra Malla, it has five tiers and is one of the the tallest temples in Nepal reaching the height of about 30m.
