Paola water fountain. Also known as Fontanone del Gianicolo, it was built between 1610 and 1614 by Giovanni Fontana (Domenico's older brother) at the behest of Pope Paul V Borghese. It was built as the terminal exhibition of the Trajan aqueduct, restored by the pope in 1608. Its design evokes the shapes of the triumphal arch, with five arches flanked by columns and surmounted by an imposing attic with a dedication inscription. For its construction, bare marbles were reused, coming from the Roman forum and from the temple of Minerva at the Nerva forum, while the columns belonged to the ancient Constantinian basilica of Saint Peter. At the end of the sixteenth century, Fontana replaced the five collection tanks, inserted between the arches, with a large marble basin. The fountain - like the nearby complex of san Pietro in Montorio - was damaged by the French during the brief Republic of 1849, an episode of which is preserved along the external wall of the church
