The intermediate structure of Froideterre is the key element of the fortified camp of Verdun. It is located on the coast of Froideterre, at an altitude of 345 m, and encloses the northern part of the battlefield between the Meuse valley and the Douaumont hills.

Its construction took place from 1887 to 1888 and was completed from 1902 to 1905.

It was particularly well equipped with artillery pieces and could flank the neighbouring works of Thiaumont and Charny, ensuring their defence and at the same time supporting combat units. It provided in particular:

a Bourges casemate with two 75 mm guns;
a eclipsing tower with two 75 mm guns;
a eclipsing machine gun tower with a rampart shelter;
of an eclipsing machine gun tower with armoured observation post:
of two armoured guardhouses
The structure was surrounded by a ditch, a 3 m high counterscarp wall and a 20 m wide wire mesh. It contained a 60 m x 16 m large barrack of reinforced concrete on masonry for 142 lying and 200 seated men.

The action was supplemented by position infantry troops charged with defending the intervening spaces. Concrete parapets and shelters with vaults of reinforced concrete effectively protected the Poilus from artillery fire. Their role proved decisive during the fierce fighting in June 1916. As did all the protected logistic spaces located not far from the fort.

These served as refuges for the units that had to defend the ridge. The cave with the four chimneys, under 8 m of marl and rock, is the best known. This almost fell into enemy hands on 23 June 1916. Also the ravine of Vignes opposite, which was intersected by several communication trenches that were bombarded by enemy artillery fire.

The French resistance at Froideterre in the summer of 1916 marked a turning point in the Battle of Verdun, because it halted the enemy advance on the heights on the right bank of the Meuse towards Verdun.
