Battlefield of a terrible battle in 1916, which cost more than 300,000 lives in 10 months, the city commemorates this painful past with a permanent tribute to the soldiers killed at the front.

Verdun, on the banks of the Meuse River, is known as the site of the Battle of Verdun, which took place during the First World War. Today, museums and memorials commemorate the battles: the Douaumont Ossuary houses the remains of over 100,000 soldiers. Northwest of the city is also the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.
