With a length of 137 metres, the cloister forms the central part of the monument.

It has 22 niches containing tombs, each symbolising one of the 46 sectors of the Verdun battlefield.

Beneath these tombs lie the remains of 130,000 unidentified soldiers, who were found on the battlefield after the armistice.

The walls and vault of the cloister are covered with almost 4,000 inscriptions.

Around a hundred stones were engraved in honour of a regiment or a historical or patriotic association.

Thousands of other stones bear the names of French and German soldiers. Each name refers to someone who was reported missing on the Verdun battlefield.

At each end of the cloister is a huge bowl containing the eternal flame, which burns on important dates or during major ceremonies.
