It is the parish church, built between 1822 and 1828.
Its name is the Assumption, or Sainte-Marie (Santa Maria Assunta in Corsica).
The church has flat pilasters on its facade and is dominated by an undulating pediment. The interior is baroque style with trompe-l'oeil paintings.
Damaged in 1835 during violent storms, the expansion is planned as well as the addition of a high altar.
In 1845, the interior arrangements had still not been made.
On the other hand, in 1847-48, the quadrangular bell tower with its oculus lantern was built, the bells being made in 1887 by Ferdinand Farnier. The bell tower will be classified in 1989.
In the meantime, between 1970 and 1975, the painted decoration was carried out in the nave, the ornamentation of the choir being carried out from 1992 to 1997 by two Russian painters, Sokolova and Tchernoritski.

Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The church is located in Piana, Corsica, and is part of the Corsican Regional Natural Park ("Parc naturel régional de Corse"). Completed in 1792 in the late Baroque style, it houses a statue of the Virgin Mary of the Assumption. It is a charming little church where Corsican singing groups occasionally perform.

Cargèse is known for its two churches opposite each other, a Greek Orthodox and a Roman Catholic, both located on a hill overlooking the Bay of Sagone. The Greek church was built between 1852 and 1870 and is a living symbol of tradition in the town. Services and ceremonies almost entirely follow the rites of Athens and Constantinople. The Roman Catholic church, L'Assomption, was built from 1825 onwards.

The patronage of this place of worship “Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption” refers to one of the many memorial or festival days in honor of Mary, Mother of God. This goes back to the festival of her physical assumption into heaven. The (Catholic) Church celebrates this festival annually on August 15th. In the Orthodox churches the feast is called the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
In rural areas of Germany with a predominantly Catholic population, it used to be customary for bundles of herbs to be collected by the population on this special day and blessed in a festive service. This old custom has occasionally survived to this day.
