The Grote Markt is the heart of the city of Breda, where the terraces fill up as soon as the sun comes out. You can sit down for a drink under the shady plane trees or choose from one of the many restaurants for a delicious lunch or dinner.

The Grote Markt then and now
The Grote Markt, the highest point in the city, has been used as a market place for centuries. In the beginning, mainly grains were traded there. The general goods markets, such as those that are now held on Tuesday mornings and Fridays, date back to 1321. The city carillonneur has been playing the carillon of the Grote Tor on market days since the seventeenth century.

The Grote Markt used to be the place where executions took place. The clock in the tower of the Town Hall called curious Breda residents to witness the gruesome spectacle. Nowadays, it is fortunately and above all pleasant.

There is a small general market on the Grote Markt on Tuesday from 09:00 – 13:00 and on Friday from 09:00 – 15:00 a larger general goods market.

The Grote Markt is the beating heart of Breda and connects a large number of shopping streets. You will find mainly nice restaurants here, but also a number of beautiful shops. The Grote Markt was originally a lot more compact. After the great city fire of 1534, a burned-down row of houses was demolished and the Market got its current dimensions. On the square is still the war memorial Judith with the head of Holofernes by Niel Steenbergen. There is also the vm meat hall and the town hall.
