In keeping with the water that surrounds this statue in the middle of the Botanical Garden of the city of Cologne, NEPTUNE is enthroned here. In Roman mythology, he is the god of the sea; in Greek mythology, he corresponds to POSEIDON. Both are usually depicted with a trident - in paintings or as statues - which is their common trademark, so to speak. In contrast to his Greek "counterpart", a planet has been named after NEPTUNE.

The strong, naked Neptune is beautiful to look at, yes. But he is a poser. Much more important for the flora are the shaggy sea creatures at his feet. They spit fresh water into the pond and enrich it with oxygen. This allows fish to live there.
