      The last dam to be built and the second highest (102.5 meters) in Germany
      is located near Unterweißbach in the Lichtetal, in the Thuringian Slate Mountains
      on the nature park route.
      The name of the Leibis-Lichte dam comes from the town of Leibis, whose residents were relocated, and the dammed river Lichte, a tributary of the Schwarza.
      It supplies drinking water to eastern Thuringia and provides flood protection.
      It is an ecological dam. Floods are simulated in order to preserve the habitat of plants and animals. The dam is a concrete gravity dam.
      It was built using block construction (approx. 1000 concrete blocks), is not anchored in the rock
      and is supported solely by its own weight.

          With the construction of the Leibis/Lichte dam, the last large drinking water dam in Germany was built. Originally, the dam was intended to secure the large water needs of the central German brown coal region in addition to the stable drinking water supply in eastern Thuringia...
          A natural and well-protected catchment area as well as the size and depth of the storage space ensure the above-average and long-term stable quality of the water from the Leibis/Lichte dam. For this purpose, the long-distance water supply system in East Thuringia was optimized between 2009 and 2014. In 2010, the trial damming of the Leibis/Lichte dam was completed. On March 29, 2010, the dam reached full capacity for the first time. This technically completes the test stowage. The test damming formally ended with the official commissioning permit on January 29, 2013. On September 1, 2012, the Weida and Zeulenroda dams went off the grid. The abolition of the associated drinking water protection zones paved the way for tourist use of the Zeulenroda dam.
