Flagship around the new port are the Havenwelten Bremerhaven with Klimahaus® Bremerhaven 8º Ost, viewing platform SAIL City, MEIN Outlet & Shopping-Center, Lloyd Marina, German Emigration Center® Bremerhaven, Zoo am Meer, Simon-Loschen-Lighthouse and the harbor tour offers.

Especially in the summer months, the New Harbor is a popular venue for major events such as the Sail. Then the harbor basin, which is also the berth for the historic museum ships, becomes a guest harbor for numerous windjammers from all over the world. In addition to the modern and innovative offers, there are also a large number of maritime historical sights.

Bremerhaven is versatile, has the modern, new port, the Weser estuary and the North Sea. I will remember my visit there for a long time ❤💛💚

Then the harbor basin, which is also the berth for the historic museum ships, becomes a guest harbor for numerous windjammers from all over the world. In addition to the modern and innovative offers, there are also a large number of maritime historical sights here.

      Original maritime significance
The leading major shipping company on the Lower Weser, the North German Lloyd, was the main user of the New Harbor in the first decades. Preserved buildings such as the beach hall, dry dock, bascule bridges and machine houses between the Old and New Harbor still bear witness to this time.

Old lighthouse (built by Simon Loschen)
With the construction of the New Harbor, the erection of a lighthouse at the lock at the harbor entrance became necessary. In 1853, the well-known Bremen architect Simon Loschen (1818-1902) was commissioned with the task. Loschen was one of the great protagonists of the neo-Gothic style in northern Germany. He also designed the Mayor Smidt Memorial Church (1855) in Bremerhaven's city center and the water tower in Leher City Park (1853).

Construction and history of the New Harbor
-In 1847, scheduled service began between Bremerhaven and New York with the two American paddle steamers WASHINGTON and HERMANN. Due to the width of their wheelhouses, they could not enter the Old Harbor through the narrow lock, but had to anchor in the roadstead first. Thus, the New Harbor was built between 1847 and 1852 under the direction of the Dutch hydraulic engineer Johannes Jacobus van Ronzelen (1800-1865), who had already planned and built the Old Harbor between 1827 and 1830. But it was not just steamship traffic, but also a general overcapacity in the Old Harbor that forced the construction of the new basin, which was originally 230 meters long and 85 meters wide. In 1858, 1862 to 1863 and 1870 to 1871, the harbor was extended to a length of 840 meters.
-In 1871/1872, the North German Lloyd (NDL) built a dry dock on the west side of the harbor, the remains of which are still visible today. It has been mostly filled in, but the well-preserved surrounding walls show the modern observer the dimensions of the dock facility.
At first, the major Bremen shipping company founded in 1857 with its legendary liner services to the USA was the most important user of the New Harbor, until after 1870 the focus of the NDL's activities shifted to the Imperial Harbors (from 1875). Subsequently, other companies from the maritime transport industry settled there, such as the Schuchmann salvage company, the Gustav W. Rogge hydraulic engineering company and the Schichau shipyard with a branch that existed there until 1987. The New Harbor was also used for the handling of bulk goods into inland waterway vessels and coastal ships, or as a berth for decommissioned ships. On September 19, 1991, the New Harbor, which until then, like the other active parts of the harbor in the Lower Weser city, had been part of the city of Bremen, was transferred to the city of Bremerhaven. This was undoubtedly due to a fundamental change in function, as the New Harbor is now being used less and less for commercial purposes and more for tourism. The historic harbor basin has become the "home port" for historic museum ships, but also a guest harbor for numerous windjammers from all over the world, who regularly gather for the "Sail."
