Beautiful sintered steps in the natural ditch of the Ellernbach.
The largest and best-known sintering stages of the phenomenon that occurs more often in the Franconian region is the Lillach near Weißenohe, but a little smaller than here you can also e.g. see at Tiefenstürmig or Tiefenhöchstadt.
Sinter steps, including sintered terraces, are deposits of porous tufa or densely layered lime sinter in a stream or flowing water and, in contrast to stalactites, form relatively quickly. Larger levels of sintering exist, for example, in the Plitvice Lakes area or in Pamukkale.
On branches, stones and twigs that have fallen into the water, small deposits form first and then over time larger and larger barriers in the course of the stream. Over time, these barriers develop into smaller basins that mark themselves as sintering steps and damming up the water like a cascade
