The full-rigged ship "Bragdø" ran aground and sank on November 1, 1921.
Norway's largest three-master, the people's ship "Bragdø" from Kristianssand, ran aground here in a hurricane on November 1, 1921. The ship, sailing under ballast, had officers from his shipping company on board. It was pushed mercilessly towards the land by the storm until it ran aground. The ballast was a blessing in disguise, because the ship heeled heavily over sandy reefs. It sidestepped so far that the yards touched the water on the reefs.
The ship stranded so close to the coast that the 26-strong crew could be brought ashore with the rescue chair with almost dry feet.
Due to the storm and high water on the following days, the ship was completely set on dry land. Because the big iron ship was high up on the beach, they dismantled it there on the spot.
Today the rest of the wreck lies in the sea 75-100 meters off the beach. It is divided in two, as if the ship was cut open lengthwise with a knife. The cause was that the ship was dismantled down to the level of the beach sand. Then the sea washed up so much sand that the rest of the ship continued to sink. Below in the wreck is still a set of welding torches with gas cylinders, which the dismantlers had to give up when bad weather again made it impossible to work.
