    Otto Wagner Pavilion Karlsplatz, Vienna from 1898
    Former city railway pavilions on Karlsplatz, built in 1898 as the Karlsplatz city railway station based on a design by Otto Wagner (collaboration: Joseph Maria Olbrich).
    Wagner designed two identically designed portal buildings, his design was revolutionary: the many decorative details make the station a prime example of Viennese Art Nouveau. Metal and wood were painted in apple green, the signal color of the city railway. Gold and white marble were added to the outside.
    When the Karlsplatz subway junction was being planned, the pavilions were threatened with demolition in the late 1960s. There were protests, the station buildings were finally dismantled and rebuilt in 1977, but 1.5 meters above the old square level. The Vienna Museum has been using the western pavilion since then, from where the trains once ran to Hütteldorf. A documentation of Otto Wagner's life and work is shown here. The eastern pavilion serves as a coffee house.

      With the Postal Savings Bank and the Steinhof Church, Wagner created key buildings of European architecture around 1900. As general planner of the Vienna Stadtbahn, he designed a structural work of art that still shapes the Vienna cityscape today.

      In a former Stadtbahn station building, the Vienna Museum shows a compact, informative documentation of Otto Wagner's life and work. The magnificent Art Nouveau pavilion also houses a shop with a high-quality range of products related to Otto Wagner and Vienna around 1900.
