Here is the center of Brussels: the Grand Place ("Großer Platz", also "Grote Markt" in Flemish) captivates with its magnificent architecture. Because around the Grande Place are lined up splendidly decorated houses with their baroque facades and gables. Since 1998 the place has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Two majestic buildings outperform each other on the Grand Place of Brussels. On the one hand, the City Hall of Brussels, right opposite the House of Bread, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Museum of the City of Brussels is located. The rivalry between the two buildings is no coincidence: the Duke of Brabant replaced the 13th century wooden bread halls - hence the name Broodhuis - in the 15th century with a prestigious building that had to showcase its power and thus counterbalance it. the imposing building opposite, symbol of urban independence. The French name Maison du Roi owes the building to Charles V, once ruler of a large part of the world and also once owner of the Broodhuis. Destroyed in the 16th century, it was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century by city architect Victor Jamaer.
Not only the history and the exterior of the Broodhuis is worthwhile. Inside, the Museum of the City of Brussels provides a richly decorated overview of the history of Brussels, with a great deal of attention to art, crafts, archeology and folklore. The original Manneken Pis statue is also housed here for security reasons, but his wardrobe - with nearly 1,000 outfits larger than any fashionista's - must be admired in the specially designed museum in Eikstraat. So much closer to the naked guy.

A combination ticket gives access to the Museum of the City of Brussels-Broodhuis and the Garderobe MannekenPis.

Brussels' elegant town hall dates back to the 15th century and is located in the historic heart of the city, on the beautiful Grand Place.

It is often considered the absolute showpiece of the most beautiful square in the world and is perhaps one of the most beautiful buildings in the country. It is therefore a monument not to be missed during your visit to Brussels. Its beautiful tower is a landmark for both day trippers and Belgians who amble through the city center.

Not only the impressive dimensions of the building, but also the remarkable carved ornaments and the asymmetrical facade immediately attract attention. And as you walk past this prestigious building, you might be greeted by a newlywed couple on the balcony ...

The interior of the town hall is also worth a detour. Those who wish can take a look at the layout and furnishings of the various rooms of this architectural masterpiece. Guided tours of the Brussels town hall are regularly organized to show visitors the richness of the interior.

The building was designed over a long period by different architects. Originally it consisted only of a belfry and the left part, which has remained unchanged. The belfry, on the other hand, was soon replaced by the current tower, when the houses of the various guilds began to establish themselves on the main market. An extra wing was added to the right, to better integrate these buildings into this unique decor.

At the top of the new tower, more than 90 meters high, the spire was crowned with Archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city of Brussels. The gilt copper statue actually serves as a weather vane. With favorable wind you can even see how this emblem fells the dragon!

The tourist office is currently housed in this showpiece of Brussels heritage.

The Town Hall (French Hôtel de Ville, n. Het Stadhuis) was built between 1401 and 1421 by Jacob van Tienen, a pupil of Jan van Osy. Initially, only the present-day left wing had been built as an extension to an existing belfry, and the town hall was originally not planned to be larger. However, after the guilds had won against the patrician families participation in the city government and the construction for the enlarged council had become too small, was built from 1444 to 1448, the second, shorter wing of the town hall.

The 96 meter high late Gothic Belfry was designed by Jan van Ruysbroeck, master builder of Philip the Good. 1449 to 1455, the tower was built in place of the predecessor tower. Its splendid design was supposed to put the Belfry of Bruges in the shade. Above the height of the roof, the massive tower body slims elegantly into an octagonal lantern made of long-lane windows and an open rib construction. On top of it stands a gilded statue of the dragon fighting archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city of Brussels. Striking is the asymmetric integration of the tower in the construction: If the left wing of ten axes, the right has only six.

The town hall building plays a central role in the Brabant Gothic and became the model for later town halls. He himself refers to the city halls of Bruges, Oudenaarde and Leuven with its richly decorated facade with magnificent sculptural decoration, but goes beyond the rich decor and especially with the tower beyond. Today's sculptures are reproductions, the originals are in the town museum in the Maison du Roi / Broodhuis.

After the bombing, which had not completely destroyed the town hall, the building was given its current appearance 1706-1714. The building is decorated with numerous sculptures. After several restoration waves, Neo-Gothic dominates inside the town hall: the Maximilians Hall with a tapestry depicting the life of Clovis, the sumptuous Council Hall, the well-equipped ballroom and the wedding hall (formerly the courtroom) are worth seeing.

The Hôtel de Ville / Stadhuis housed not only the city council, but also until 1795 the Staten (State Assembly) of Brabant. In 1830, the provisional government acted from here during the Belgian Revolution.

A square was laid out here early on, namely in the 11th century. In 1695 French groups attacked Brussels and destroyed the Grand Place. The Brussels guilds then simply rebuilt the square. During the reconstruction, the city council paid attention to the uniform development. By the way, the south side of the square is slightly offset so that there is no right angle in the south-east corner.

The two very different names Broodhuis (Dutch for bread house) and Maison du Roi (Francis for the King's House) come from two different buildings with different functions ago. In Dutch, the name of a medieval predecessor building from the 13th Century, a wooden building in which the bakers of the city sold their bread. When the Duchy of Brabant fell to the Habsburgs, the house took on the ducal, later royal court and became the Maison du Roi. In 1515 it was replaced by a stone house. Directly in front of the building was the place of execution.

After the destruction in 1695 there were several successor buildings here. The current building is decorated in Neo-Gothic or Neo-Renaissance style, the façade is based on engravings dating from 1515-1536, reminiscent of the town hall of Oudenaarde. In 1873, the city commissioned the architect Victor Jamaer to restore the façade; In 1896 the work was completed. In addition to the historical views, the architect also created an originally planned archway and extended the building with further typical 16th century re-creations.

Today, the Maison du Roi / Broodhuis houses the City Museum, which exhibits, among other things, original city hall sculptures from around 1400 and keeps the costumes of the Manneken Pis.

After their destruction by the French, the guild houses were rebuilt around 1698 in a magnificent baroque style. In addition to the rich Baroque decoration, the typical character of the square is largely characterized by the unusually narrow plots for Baroque buildings, which are based on the Gothic floor plans of the previous buildings. Due to the large number of houses (in addition to the dominant buildings of the town hall and the bread house and the seven streets, there are 37 buildings lined up in a row) the square appears very lively and varied.

The strongly structured facades with their rich sculptural decoration, the elaborately designed gables, pilasters and balustrades are based on the Italian Baroque with some Flemish influences. The architects involved in the new development were Jan Cosijn, Pieter Herbosch, Antonio Pastorana, Cornelis van Nerven, Guillaume de Bruyn and Adolphe Samyn. In addition to the name of the respective guild, each house also has a proper name. House numbering begins at the northern corner of the square, to the left of Rue au Beurre, in a counterclockwise direction.
