Two majestic buildings outperform each other on the Grand Place of Brussels. The French name Maison du Roi owes the building to Charles V, once ruler of a large part of the world and also once owner of the Broodhuis. The interior of the town hall is also worth a detour. Those who wish can take a look at the layout and furnishings of the various rooms of this architectural masterpiece. Guided tours of the Brussels town hall are regularly organized to show visitors the richness of the interior.

The building was designed over a long period by different architects. Originally it consisted only of a belfry and the left part, which has remained unchanged. The belfry, on the other hand, was soon replaced by the current tower, when the houses of the various guilds began to establish themselves on the main market. An extra wing was added to the right, to better integrate these buildings into this unique decor.

At the top of the new tower, more than 90 meters high, the spire was crowned with Archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city of Brussels. The gilt copper statue actually serves as a weather vane. With favorable wind you can even see how this emblem fells the dragon!

The Town Hall (French Hôtel de Ville, n. Het Stadhuis) was built between 1401 and 1421 by Jacob van Tienen, a pupil of Jan van Osy. Initially, only the present-day left wing had been built as an extension to an existing belfry, and the town hall was originally not planned to be larger. However, after the guilds had won against the patrician families participation in the city government and the construction for the enlarged council had become too small, was built from 1444 to 1448, the second, shorter wing of the town hall.

The 96 meter high late Gothic Belfry was designed by Jan van Ruysbroeck, master builder of Philip the Good. 1449 to 1455, the tower was built in place of the predecessor tower. Its splendid design was supposed to put the Belfry of Bruges in the shade. Above the height of the roof, the massive tower body slims elegantly into an octagonal lantern made of long-lane windows and an open rib construction. On top of it stands a gilded statue of the dragon fighting archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city of Brussels. Striking is the asymmetric integration of the tower in the construction: If the left wing of ten axes, the right has only six.

The town hall building plays a central role in the Brabant Gothic and became the model for later town halls. He himself refers to the city halls of Bruges, Oudenaarde and Leuven with its richly decorated facade with magnificent sculptural decoration, but goes beyond the rich decor and especially with the tower beyond. Today's sculptures are reproductions, the originals are in the town museum in the Maison du Roi / Broodhuis.

After the bombing, which had not completely destroyed the town hall, the building was given its current appearance 1706-1714. The building is decorated with numerous sculptures. After several restoration waves, Neo-Gothic dominates inside the town hall: the Maximilians Hall with a tapestry depicting the life of Clovis, the sumptuous Council Hall, the well-equipped ballroom and the wedding hall (formerly the courtroom) are worth seeing.

The Hôtel de Ville / Stadhuis housed not only the city council, but also until 1795 the Staten (State Assembly) of Brabant. In 1830, the provisional government acted from here during the Belgian Revolution.

The architects involved in the new development were Jan Cosijn, Pieter Herbosch, Antonio Pastorana, Cornelis van Nerven, Guillaume de Bruyn and Adolphe Samyn. In addition to the name of the respective guild, each house also has a proper name. House numbering begins at the northern corner of the square, to the left of Rue au Beurre, in a counterclockwise direction.
