        The Cathedral of Bilbao (Catedral de Santiago Apóstol - "Cathedral of the Holy Apostle James") is the bishop's church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bilbao, founded in 1949, in the Basque metropolis of Bilbao. The Gothic church, raised to the basilica minor in 1819, dates back to a pilgrimage church on the coastal route of the Camino de Santiago. Except for the neo-Gothic portal facade, it was built from the end of the 14th to the beginning of the 16th century. (Wikipedia)

              Beautiful gothic cathedral at the centre of medieval Bilbao (Casco viejo or Alde Zaharra in Basque). Really magical when some street musician starts playing will music in the small square in front of the Cathedral.

              Definitely worth a visit.

                The oldest building in the city of Bilbao.

                The current Gothic church was built on an even older pilgrimage chapel, dating from the time of the pilgrimages in honour of Saint James.

                The cathedral has three naves with ribbed vaults. Although it was originally built in the Gothic style, the current façade and tower date from the 19th century. The choir and cloister are of extraordinary beauty, the latter a late Gothic work. The crypt is built into the former pilgrimage chapel, whose walls have been incorporated into the building.

                      Bilbao Cathedral is dedicated to James the Elder (Santiago), who is probably (besides Peter and Paul) the most prominent apostle and national saint of Spain. The European network of Ways of Saint James, usually marked by the symbol of the yellow shell on a blue background, leads pilgrims to his tomb. This is in the northern Spanish town of 'Santiago de Compostella', where he rests in a magnificent basilica built in his honor.
                      The martyrdom (execution) of James is handed down by the evangelist Luke in the New Testament "Acts of the Apostles". The feast day of Saint James in the calendar of saints is July 25th.
