      Linn has been a district of Krefeld since its incorporation in 1901. Linn, with its historic town center, is nestled in the Lower Rhine lowlands, approximately 5 kilometers east of Krefeld city center and south of Uerdingen. Together with Oppum and parts of Bockum, it forms the Oppum-Linn district.

      The oldest reference to Linn can be found in the Kaiserswerth Charter, written between 1090 and 1120. At that time, the Kaiserswerth Chapter received income from Linn. A Gerlach and a Gerhard von Linn appear as witnesses in 1186 and 1234, respectively.[1] The castle in Linn was first documented in 1299. At that time, Linn belonged to the County of Cleves (1265–1392/94). The town of Linn was founded in the first half of the 14th century by Count Dietrich VIII of Cleves in the east of the outer bailey of Linn Castle.[2] In 1388, the Archbishop of Cologne, Friedrich III of Saarwerden, took over the rule of Linn as a Cologne fiefdom. Linn Castle became the seat of the Electorate of Cologne bailiff Tilgin von Bremt.

      Clemens August Ferdinand Maria Hyazinth, Duke of Bavaria (* August 16, 1700 in Brussels[1]; † February 6, 1761 in Koblenz) was, as Clemens August I, Archbishop of Cologne from 1723 to 1761 and thus simultaneously Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, sovereign of the associated archbishopric and the neighboring territories of Recklinghausen and Westphalia. He was also, by office, Legatus natus of the Holy Apostolic See in Rome and Archchancellor for Imperial Italy. He also combined the offices of Grand Master of the Teutonic Order (1732–1761), Prince-Bishop of Regensburg (1716–1719), Paderborn (1719–1761), Münster (1719–1761), Hildesheim (1724–1761) and Osnabrück (1728–1761) as well as other ecclesiastical dignities.

      Clemens August, known at the time as Monsieur des cinq églises (Lord of the Five Churches) because of his bishoprics, was one of the most important ecclesiastical imperial princes of his time. His foreign policy was characterized by frequent changes of alliances. He is remembered by posterity as a Rococo prince who loved splendor, ran a magnificent court and had numerous castles built or rebuilt.
