Not far from the "Ruhlaer Häuschen" refuge and about 100m away from the Rennsteig there is the archaeological monument of the same name. Around 1743, Duke Ernst August I of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach had the old hunting lodge here demolished in order to build a hunting lodge. From 1745 the duke had the building converted and expanded into a pleasure palace. It was planned to complete the construction in the spring of 1748. In January 1748 the duke died and as the country was in debt the construction was not completed. Much of the near-completed building fell into disrepair or was sold for demolition. The Schweinaquelle is right next to the monument and feeds the little pond. Benches invite you to take a break and you can fill up your water supplies.
