Kaiserswerth was an independent city until it was incorporated into Düsseldorf in 1929, but never had a city census document. By 1181 at the latest, however, all conditions were met to be able to speak of a city. At that time, the monastery dissolved its vineyards on today's market so that new building land was available for the citizens.
The old town hall once stood on the median of the market. During the siege in 1702 it was destroyed and not rebuilt. The last town hall in Kaiserswerth now houses, among other things, the district administration office 5 of the Düsseldorf city administration.

      Kaiserswerth
Kaiserswerth is a district of Düsseldorf located on the Rhine, which belongs to the city district 5. The former imperial city was incorporated in 1929.
The name Kaiserswerth is derived from the Middle High German word werth for island. It therefore means Kaiserinsel or island of the emperor.
      Geographical location
The former imperial city of Kaiserswerth is located directly on the Rhine and halfway between Düsseldorf and Duisburg. The Rhine makes a shallow curve here, so that the river can be seen for a good 13 kilometers. Kaiserswerth, which covers 4.81 km², is about 10 km from the city center of Düsseldorf and has around 8,100 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2016). After the settlement period, Kaiserswerth is the oldest documented district of Düsseldorf. Together with the districts of Angermund, Kalkum, Lohausen, Stockum and Wittlaer, Kaiserswerth now forms Düsseldorf's 5th district. The district is considered an "upscale" residential area.

      The Kaiserswerth Menhir
The oldest surviving monument in Kaiserswerth and in Düsseldorf as a whole, apart from a few archaeological finds, is the Kaiserswerth Menhir from the period between 2000 and 1500 BC.

        History (2)
        Middle Ages

Rear view of the Suitbertus Basilica seen from the banks of the Rhine
Between 695 and 700, the monk Suitbert founded a Benedictine monastery on an island off the Rhine, a Werth, later Kaiserswerth, which was destroyed again 88 years later. This Rhine island, on which the manorial farm Rinthausen was located, had been given to the Anglo-Saxon Suibertus by the Frankish mayor of the palace Pippin the Middle. The royal court mentioned was later gradually converted into a castle. In addition, this was one of the oldest Rhine crossings, with a good view of the Rhine. This was and is a favorable strategic location for a fortress.
After the destruction of the Benedictine monastery, the "Kaiserswerth Abbey" was founded. The King of the East Frankish Empire, Ludwig III. placed the monastery under his protection in 877 and freed its churches and goods from normal jurisdiction as well as from all customs and public charges. In 1045, the imperial palace in Kaiserswerth, which was well known in the Middle Ages, was founded by the Salian emperor Henry III. During the "coup d'état of Kaiserswerth" in 1062, the Cologne archbishop Anno II of Cologne kidnapped the still underage German king Henry IV from this imperial palace. Through this royal robbery, Anno gained regency over the Holy Roman Empire until Henry IV came of age.
In 1078, the church of St. George was built near the Kaiserswerth menhir (destroyed in 1689).
In 1145, Kaiserswerth became an imperial city when King Conrad III took the inhabitants under his protection.
