    "... Moved by the testimony of the Bible and by ecumenical encounters, Theodor and Friederike Fliedner gave an answer to the social needs of their time in Kaiserswerth in 1836.

    They developed a new form of diaconal service for women. The focus was on the office of deaconess, nursing and education.

    "In the beginning there was an idea with power," says the first sentence of the sisters' rule. In 1836 Theodor and Friederike Fliedner established the office of deaconesses and built the first deaconess motherhouse in Kaiserswerth. The women lived there in a community of life, faith and service.

    The long tradition of motherhouse diakonia began, particularly shaped by Caroline Fliedner, who held the position of head of the community for more than 40 years and shaped life together. Young evangelical Christian women received good nursing/educational training. When exercising their profession, the deaconesses wore a dress and bonnet - like married middle-class women. In this way they could appear in society as unmarried women in order to do their service. This was something new at the beginning of the 19th century. Over the course of time, this clothing developed into the typical deaconess costume, which repeatedly underwent minor changes. ..."

      The mother house of the Kaiserswerther Diakonie was inaugurated on May 7, 1903 together with the mother house church. It replaced the mother house in the center of Kaiserswerth, founded by Pastor Theodor Fliedner and his wife Friederike in 1836, today's “parent house”. The newly built motherhouse developed into the center of the Kaiserswerther sisterhood and the deaconess institution.

      From here, deaconesses were sent out to the many stations at home and abroad, and here they returned to gather strength for their work in the community.

      Today there is a hotel in the mother house.

In the diakonia (according to the tradition of the orders), the motherhouse was or is the home and life of the deaconesses.
