On the ramparts of Ypres are two British Moir bunkers that were built in 1918 for fear of a German attack. Meanwhile, during the successful German Spring Offensive, the Germans were more than a kilometer from the Ypres city walls. A pillbox is a small bunker. The pillboxes are located at the Kruitmagazijn southwest of Ypres on the last demibastion. These cylindrical bunkers have a steel roof on which concrete was poured. The roof was placed on eight small steel feet on the masonry walls. These two prefab bunkers were equipped with a Vickers machine gun that was placed on a carrying frame. The harness, consisting of four arms, was placed on an axle at the bottom of the turret, so that the gunner could aim all around. Earth was thrown onto the pillbox and through a 360° opening the gunner had a view all around. The pillboxes could be reached from an underground tunnel, which ran under the fortresses.
