Ramparts Cemetery, Lille Gate, located at the Rijselpoort gate, is one of the most beautifully situated cemeteries on the Western Front.
The cemetery sits atop the old ramparts, beneath which shelters were located from incoming fire.
From October 1914 until the summer of 1918, Ypres formed the center of the salient (Sailent) held by Commonwealth forces throughout the war (initially, the French also controlled Ypres). From April 1915, the city was bombed and completely destroyed. The cemetery was established by the French in November 1914 and used intermittently by Commonwealth forces from February 1915 to April 1918.
