The Church of São Lourenço, better known as the Church of the Grilos, is one of the most unique churches in Porto's old town, located very close to the Sé Cathedral.
It was built by the Jesuits in 1577, thanks to donations from wealthy families who wished to be buried there.
In 1759, the Jesuits were expelled from Portugal by order of the Marquis of Pombal, and the church passed into the hands of the University of Coimbra.
It was later acquired by the Discalced Augustinians, known as "frades-grilos" (brothers of the Grilos) for their dark habits, giving rise to the church's popular name.
