The Rennsteig's most beautiful border stones decorated with coats of arms can be found between Steinbach am Wald and Brennersgrün on a section of about one kilometer. The founders of the Rennsteig Association, Ludwig Hertel and Johannes Bühring, therefore gave this section of the Rennsteig the name "Schönwappenweg".
As a path on the ridge of the mountains, the Rennsteig could be used quite practically as a dividing line between sovereign territories. And so the name "Rynnestig" is first found in medieval documents as a border designation.

Why so many landmarks? As a way on the crest of the mountain, the Rennsteig (which was anyway for long distances limit of dialects and customs) was quite practical as a dividing line between territories, and so you will find the name "Rynnestig" first in medieval documents as a boundary name. Mind you: Rennsteig means "fast connection", so he was traffic connection, before he was called as a boundary line.
