According to old documents, the castle complex had a total of seven towers.
The Gothic gate tower from 1340 with its steep hipped roof made of slate was one of these towers and served as a town or castle gate. Anyone who wanted to go to Altweilnau had to go through this gate.
There is an opening in the ceiling of the gate passage through which a long rope led, which was used to ring the small Mary bell on the upper level.
The gate tower has three levels and is unfortunately not available for viewing.

The square gate tower made of quarry stone masonry dates from 1340 and, with its steep hipped roof made of slate, forms the actual entrance to the old area of Altweilnau. The tower was lowered by 1.50 m by blasting the rock base.

On the inside of the pointed arch gates, the wooden recesses for the gate wings (south) and portcullis slots (north) are clearly visible. With a height of around 26 m and a length of around 7 m, the gate tower has three levels.
The living room on the second floor is equipped with a fireplace surround, a wood-paneled bench and stone benches in the window niches. In the roof truss there is a bell from the 14th century with the inscription "Magister Johannes", a founder who was based in the Mainz area.
The bell was rung for the nearby chapel, as well as for the start of classes at the old school in the immediate vicinity.
