It makes sense to drive the long access road, even if the first ford or gully at the beginning of the road is a deterrent. After that it gets better.
Unfortunately, this bay is very touristy, so take advantage of rainy or overcast days. In winter it is not overcrowded even on sunny days. The water is still suitable for swimming despite the low temperatures - a bit cold, but okay. You have to go through the sea ford anyway if you want to get to the island - or you can hop over the rocks.

Very unusual bathing beach with great colors in the water. In the middle "pool" you can stand anywhere and therefore also walk through it great. Only when the excursion boats dock does it get much fuller here. However, this beach has always been touristy in the summer months.

Before you start: Take enough water with you. Sturdy shoes are an advantage, but not a must. The route is not really demanding with sturdy shoes. At peak times, things get stuck here, so come early 🌅

Balos is probably one of the beaches that every visitor to Crete must visit at least once. Either by car over 8 km of the typical Cretan bumpy road (four-wheel drive is recommended, otherwise you have to drive in first gear) and then a short but strenuous hike with 140 meters of elevation down (and back up again). Or comfortably by excursion boat, which is much more expensive, but you avoid the chaos on the bumpy road and the parking lot, which is far too small in the season.

During the season, up to 1000 (!) cars, most of them small cars, struggle along the gravel road and when the parking lot is full, people park along the road. This extends the walking path to the beach and leads to chaos because arriving and departing cars cannot pass each other.
