"... The Elsterbach is a nine kilometer long, north-northwestern and right-hand tributary of the Rhine in the Rheingau.
Course: The Elsterbach has its source a few 100 m north of the Geisenheim district of Stephanshausen on a wooded southern slope of the Rheingau Mountains at an altitude of around 400 m. It flows in a southerly direction through the center of Stephanshausen before disappearing back into the forest, where it is fed by a right-hand tributary - the Grundscheidbach.
Later, the bottom of the valley opens up into a narrow clearing and leads the stream through the Marienthal monastery complex. Immediately south of the pilgrimage site, the Elsterbach crosses the district road 984 and turns into the forest in a southeasterly direction.
Along the stream, which is accompanied by the county road, there are a number of former mills, some of which are now used as tourist spots, until it meets the first vineyards and reaches the district of Johannisberger Grund. The stream then leaves the Geisenheim area and flows again through vineyards past the Johannisberger Klause to Winkel. There it passes under the Koblenz-Wiesbaden railway line, then the town's main street and finally the federal highway 42 before it flows into the Rhine. ..."
