The architect Friedrich Weinbrenner also planned the construction of the Karlsruhe town hall. It replaced an older building from 1728, which was demolished in 1811.
The current town hall was built in several stages between 1805 and 1825. The foundation stone for the current building was not laid until 1821.
Like many other Karlsruhe buildings, this one was destroyed on September 27, 1944 in the Second World War and rebuilt between 1948 and 1955.
The carillon in the town hall was put into operation in December 1981 and consists of 42 bronze bells from the Karlsruhe bell and art foundry.
