The Sanctuary of the Divine Maternity and the Convent of Concesa, located in Trezzo sull'Adda, were built between 1635 and 1646 at the behest of Cardinal Cesare Monti.

The task was entrusted to Baroque style architects Francesco Richini and Carlo Buzzi. The Sanctuary and the Convent were immediately entrusted to the Discalced Carmelite Fathers.

The Sanctuary of Concesa is built under the Concesa fortress, a rock spur that dominates the Adda valley.

A place of great scenic beauty and spirituality which soon became a destination for pilgrims and a resting place for travellers.

Pilgrims, wayfarers and devotees of Mary, since the second half of the 1500s, came to Concesa to venerate the image of the Madonna breastfeeding the Child, placed on a willow tree near an ancient source, which was attributed with the ability to heal the sick.

In 1611, where the water flowed, a small chapel was built where a new image of the Madonna was placed.

Women turned to this image when facing the risks of pregnancy, and after giving birth they came on pilgrimage to thank "Mary".

SELF. Cardinal Cesare Monti, Archbishop of Milan (1635/1650), wanted to erect a sanctuary in honor of Maria SS. at his own expense.

It was opened in a solemn manner and was entrusted to two Oblate priests of San Carlo, but seeing that the two religious could not suffice for the spiritual care of a continuous influx of faithful, he also had a convent built for a community of fifteen religious.

The construction was finished in five years, and on 27 March 1647 H.E. Cardinal Monti was able to hand over to the Carmelite Fathers: Sanctuary – Convent – Vegetable Garden and Garden.
