Roskilde station was built in 1847 by Det Sjællandske Jernbaneselskab in connection with the construction of the railway between Copenhagen and Roskilde.

Roskilde Station's original main building from 1847 still stands today, making it Denmark's oldest existing station. Both the reception building and the platforms have been expanded several times over the years. In 1998, a major renovation of Roskilde station began. The facades of the old station building were restored and restored so that the colors corresponded to the original facades, and the roof was renovated. The station received automatic doors, elevators and the arrivals hall received new floors, ceilings and furniture. The renovation was only completed in 2002 after 4 years of work.

Roskilde train station has been a listed building since 1964.
