The Canary Dragon Tree is part of the Canary Islands' socio-cultural identity and is considered one of the symbols of the Canary Islands along with the Canary Island Palm, Canary Island Pine and other plants of the islands. For the natives of the Canary Islands, he represented the earthly manifestation of a tutelary god, and they worshiped dragon trees as places of special power and importance, whose sap served as a remedy. One of the most important is the Drago de Agalán, at over 400 years old it is the oldest dragon tree on La Gomera and also the largest specimen. It is considered a symbol of La Gomera and is located in the southern municipality of Alajeró. It appears on the coat of arms of this municipality. It is located in a beautiful agave-covered canyon called Tajonaje.
