The Zuidwelle Bridge over the salty canal (Zuidwelle). A bridge dating from 1783 with 7 arches. Martinus Phernambucq was paid for the stones and Marinus Lookman for the actual construction of the bridge.
The first fixed bridge was made in 1670; before that there was a drawbridge. The bridge was actually built in 1784 as it still is today. This can be found in the city accounts. The accompanying simply designed gate was demolished in 1842, at the request of the city council, at the same time as the modest West Gate, because the French wanted to modernize the city defenses and most danger was to be expected from the sea. That is why the Port Gates, the Nobel Gate and the Bagijne Gate were extensively renovated. In place of the demolished gates, guardhouses were placed on either side, which could be connected by a fence. In 1867 these were also sold for demolition. The demolition of the Hoofdpoort followed at the end of 1869. In 1849 and subsequent years the city walls disappeared.
The Zuidwelle Bridge was restored in 1954 and 1997. The West Bridge with its 3 arches dates from shortly after the French period and was widened and renovated on both sides in 1974, and is the link between the city center and the West plan (Poortambacht).
