Since 1815, the border crossing has meant an involuntary, annoying and sometimes expensive interruption to travel and routes, caused by strict border controls and customs fees on both sides. Between 1945 and 1991, border traffic to France was handled from this customs building in Neulauterburg, initially in temporary facilities and from 1956 onwards. Especially at the beginning of the 1960s, Neulauterburg grew to become the largest border transshipment point in Rhineland-Palatinate. More than 60 customs officers were employed here on the German side alone for the border crossing and, in addition to passenger traffic, processed around 50,000 trucks annually. From 1985, goods traffic was directed via the newly opened "Bienwald" crossing near Scheibenhardt and from 1991, several years before the EC internal market was implemented, border supervision for passenger traffic in Neulauterburg was discontinued.

Today you have the opportunity to voluntarily interrupt your journey at the border near Lauterbourg on the German side in Neulauterburg. Enjoy a culinary Italian break in the attached restaurant in the customs pavilion, the former customs station, this time free from the constraints of passport and customs formalities, combined with a visit to the museum.

In 1793 the area became French. In 1815 the Bavarian kingdom reconquered the area up to the Lauter. Since then the border with France has been here (again). In the old (German) customs pavilion there is a small restaurant and in a separate area there are some information boards and photos from earlier times.
I like to take a break here and have a drink. In summer you can sit outside - within sight of the border, which is currently only noticeable by a sign. I really hope that it stays that way and that you can continue to get to our neighbors in France without any problems.
