The building was constructed by Bishop Heinrich Hartard von Rollingen after the destruction of Lauterburg Castle in 1716. In 1738/39 the town of Lauterbourg built a barracks in the vicinity. In 1765 the building became the seat of the Speyer administration, and in 1770 it became the seat of an official winery. After the French Revolution the building was the residence of the commandant of the square from 1809 to 1870, hence the name "commander's house". During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 the building housed a military hospital, after which it became the property of the school administration. From 1874 onwards the building housed a two-class preparatory school. In 1938 the town of Lauterbourg acquired the former bishop's palace and its outbuildings. From 1940 to 1960 the complex was used to accommodate families affected by the war. The building has served as a school since 1960.

The Renaissance building, erected by the bailiff Jacob Holzapfel, burned down in 1678 and was restored in 1716 under the reign of the Bishop of Speyer.
The building successively housed an episcopal regency council from 1765 to 1771, the seat of the bailiwick from 1770 to 1789, the offices of the commander of the place from 1809 to 1870 and the preparatory school for student teachers, with boarding school, from 1873 to 1938. In 1960, it housed the general education college, then the elementary school in 1968.
Opposite is the seat of the bailiwick and the former cantonal court.
