The fortified church of St. Walburga was probably built as early as the 13th or 14th century; it is considered the original parish of the Steben market town and the region. The remains of the old Evangelical Lutheran parish church can still be found right next to the Lutheran Church. Only the choir remains of the fortified church, as its nave was demolished with the completion of the new church.

According to unattested tradition, it was built around 1020, but certainly between 1250 and 1300.
The frescoes on the Gothic vaults of the choir, rediscovered in 1910, show: Last Judgement, a series of images from the Passion of Christ, baroque furnishings, a figure of the Risen Christ, today a listed building.

The fortified church of St. Walburga was built around 1500. This makes it one of the oldest buildings in the Franconian Forest. The Gothic-style vaults in the interior feature fresco paintings. Only the choir area of the fortified church remains because the nave had to make way for the Luther Church. It stands right next to the Luther Church.
