The Nordertor with the striking stepped gable is the only surviving city gate Flensburgs and the landmark of the city. The gate in the present form was built in 1595 as an "entrance gate" and formed until 1795 the northern boundary of the city.

Today's Nordertor was built between 1594 and 1596 and is still considered a monument worth seeing from bygone times. Its gable is divided into several steps, which is why it is also known as the "stepped gable". On the north side of the stepped gable above the archway are two coats of arms, the right one shows the coat of arms of the city of Flensburg and the left the Danish royal coat of arms of Christian VII. The inscription "Peace nourishes, strife consumes" can also be read on the gate. The fact that Flensburg was a wealthy commercial city can be seen very well from the overall quite feudal building of this landmark.

Through trade with the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, several Flensburg merchants amassed considerable wealth. This is evidenced by donations to the churches, such as the altar and various epitaphs in St. Mary's, as well as the Nordertor (North Gate), which protected the city from the north for two hundred years from 1595. This Renaissance building is Flensburg's last remaining city gate.
