Maen Madoc is an ancient monolith that stands at approximately 10 feet (3 m) tall. It is thought it was originally erected during the Bronze Age, though it was definitely adapted by the Romans as a memorial to 'Dervacus, son of Justus'.
There is no record of who these people were, though this part of South Wales is rich in Roman history. The 160-mile (260 km) Sarn Helen road runs north to south nearby, while there are plenty of other remnants of this once prospering empire in the surrounding countryside.

Maen Madoc is a menhir referring to a (Late or Post) Roman Christian cemetery: "DERVAC(IVS) FILIVS IVSTI (H)IC IACIT" = "("of) Dervacus, son of Justus. He's here."
However, during archaeological excavations - also at the place where the stone originally stood (a few hundred meters further, at the end of the Sarn Helen, the Roman road) - no traces of a cemetery were ever found.
