Standing proud in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Pen y Fan is the tallest mountain in South Wales. At 2,907 feet (886 m), this summit might not be a particularly high one, but the views from the top are amazing. As the highest peak south of Snowdonia, you can really see for miles on a clear day — all the way to the Severn Bridge and out into Powys.

While it might not be high, the SAS use the area as a training ground for a reason. Be careful on windy days and wear sensible footwear in the wet. Also, consider walking up from Corn Du. It's the slightly tougher route but is well worth the walk.

As the highest peak in South Wales, Pen y Fan affords breathtaking views. The ascent is tough but not overly challenging, making it a good choice for all abilities. There are plenty of peaks nearby, affording ample hill-bagging opportunities. It can get very busy here, especially weekends/holidays when the weather is good. Be sure to get there early to beat the crowds. Pen y Fan, which roughly translates as ‘Top Spot’, stands at 2,907 feet (886 m).

Pen y Fan is a beautiful mountain and can be hiked at any time of the year, from a variety of directions. Whether it's rain, wind, or shine, it's a special, mystical place. It’s been my local mountain and spiritual home for 40 years. My go-to place. If you want information or routes, get in touch.

I can only recommend the trail. The climb may not be easy for less fit people, but the view it offers is absolutely worth it. Nature fans should warmly recommend the Pen y Fan. The landscape along the paths is really beautiful and the view on the summit is fantastic. Even recommended for colder, cloudier days.

At 886 metres in height, Pen y Fan is the highest mountain in South Wales and the highest summit south of Cader Idris. Pen y Fan boasts a number of routes to the summit other than the far too popular routes up from Pont ar Daf and the Storey Arms. Pen y Fan is also one of the Welsh 3 Peaks.

If you decide to hike in the rain and wind you won’t get the reward of the views from the top but it’s still a fantastic hike. Memories of trying to pose for a photo at the summit whilst being blown over by the wind will stay with you for life 😂

My 1st climb April this year and penfan was my first I absolutely loved it and I have not looked back since I've done most of the beacons few remainders to do nice part of North Wales trips but nothing beats in the first climb of Pen Y Fan back in April 2021 I've lost nearly 7st win win .

The highest peak in south wales and still a very easy one to reach with a short walk up the too straight and too perfect path from the parking. The view is well worth it and if you choose an exotic time or less good weather it is even relatively quiet up here. National Trust put a sign on top of th cairn which is the standard selfie spot here now - gives a bit mixed feelings as the cairn is an ancient burial site.

Storey Arms this is the quickest way to get to the summit to Pen y Fan. On well laid paths although still a hard climb. The weather system can be completely different from the start of the walk to the trig so take warm waterproofs clothing as it can be freezing up there.

Not for the faint of heart considering it feels like you climb halfway up to come right back down and start again but the views of the reservoir are amazing and the final scramble up to Corn Du was epic! It was blowing a gale and still a bit snowy when we went. Good footwear is a must and layer up because the wind is a bit bitey higher up!
