Monaco's imposing St. Nicholas Cathedral was built in Romanesque-Byzantine style and is an artistic masterpiece both inside and out. The interior of the cathedral has a marble altar, mosaics and marble walls.
The cathedral was built in 1875 on the site of an earlier thirteenth-century church. Since then, several royal weddings have taken place here, including that of Prince Rainier with Hollywood star Grace Kelly. This church is also their final resting place and that of other members of the royal family.

The Roman-Byzantine style cathedral, built in 1875 from the white stone of La Turbie, houses the tombs of the deceased princes. Inside, next to the magnificent main altar and the bishop's throne made of white Carrara marble, there is an altarpiece by the Nice painter Louis Bréa from 1500.
In 1868, the territory of the principality was separated from the diocese of Nice and it was decided to demolish the church of Saint-Nicolas, despite its six hundred years of history, in order to build the cathedral that exists today. Prince Charles III laid the foundation stone. on January 6, 1875. The cathedral was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and given the name “Notre-Dame-de-L’Immaculée-conception”. Its co-patrons are Saint Nicholas and Saint Benedict. The cathedral was consecrated on June 11, 1911.
Pontifical ceremonies take place in the cathedral on major liturgical feast days, as well as on Saint Devota's Day (January 27) and National Day (November 19). Impressive church concerts are played on the large organ with its four manuals. From September to June, Sunday mass (10 a.m.) is accompanied by the boys' choir “Les petits chanteurs de Monaco” and the “Maîtrise de la cathédrale”.
Free access (outside of church services) daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Appropriate clothing must be worn: shoulders must be covered, miniskirts and shorts are prohibited (Bermuda shorts length is acceptable).
