"... They look most beautiful from the direction of Homberg. Mighty stone blocks, crowned by green copper sheeting on the roof and turrets: The Ruhrort bridge towers on the Friedrich-Ebert-Rheinbrücke are a historic Duisburg landmark.
The construction of Duisburg's first Rhine bridge began in 1904, which is why a sign on one of the towers quite rightly announces a project by the city of Ruhrort in the municipality of Homberg. The port district was only incorporated in 1905, and the “city in the countryside” even seven decades later. The bridge construction was completed in 1907. And also the towers, which at that time still had smaller counterparts on the left bank of the Rhine.
The bridge workers who were responsible for collecting bridge tolls lived in the towers.
Nothing can be seen today of the first iron truss bridge. It was initially named after Admiral Scheer, a naval commander in the Battle of Skagerrak (1916), then blown up at the end of the Second World War (1945) because enemy troops wanted to cross over. ..."
