The parish of Grembergen was initially subordinate to that of Zele, which was donated by Charlemagne to the Abbey of Werden between 802 and 805.
Around 1100 a church was built in Grembergen in the Zand district, near Dendermonde. Initially it was a branch church of Zele, later Grembergen became an independent parish.
At the end of the 16th century, during the religious disputes, the church was destroyed. In 1599 the restored church was consecrated. However, the old church stood in a place that made the defence of Dendermonde difficult. However, the church was only demolished after the city of Dendermonde was shelled by Marlborough's troops in 1706, as part of the War of the Spanish Succession. The church was demolished in 1710. A new church was built further north, partly using the materials of the old church. It was a single-nave church with two side chapels, dedicated to Saint Margaret and Saint Eligius.
In 1846, the side chapels were demolished and replaced by side aisles. The front facade was also renovated. In 1873, the tower was raised.
