The Great Crested Newt hut is gone. Dead. Demolished. Nothing stands in its place yet (except for the installation of "Valleien Vertellen" (Valleys Telling Stories), an open-air exhibition that will move to the Dijle River in early 2026 and previously visited the Demer).

No, you don't need a hat, a "hut" is Dutch for a hut. This one is dedicated to the crested newt, which is called Kamsalamander in the local language and is found in the area. So take good care and look often in the pools and wet meadows all around.

You could have your picnic here (please take your rubbish and other leftovers with you) or even light a campfire to - no, not crested newts, they are strictly protected - grill sausages and marshmallows.

If you like it so much that you want to stay a little longer: You will find a campsite right next door.
