Here you see the largest inhabited warehouse complex in Amsterdam. Until the beginning of the 20th century, these were filled with goods that were delivered to Amsterdam from all over the world. In the past, people in the Netherlands had to pay both import and export excise duties (taxes) for the transit of goods on the Amsterdam market. That is why the government warehouse was established in 1827 where goods could be temporarily stored until the end of the 19th century without import duties being charged. The complex was therefore completely closed off. At Laagte Kadijk (one street back) a wall appeared and the gate you just walked through was the only entrance.
You can also view the historic crane here and take a look at the back of Artis. With a bit of luck you will see the giraffes and elephants in their outdoor enclosure.
