Actually, it's more the path that fascinated me. Always nice along the slope, not all the way up, not all the way down. However, it is signposted with Eliashöhle and is therefore easy to find.

A whole great, exciting and almost mystical path below the Wartburg. Some passages require surefootedness on wet or slippery surfaces. Some of the paths are very narrow and exposed.

On a really adventurous, but with reasonable equipment and surefootedness, easy to walk hiking trail, this small cave is located directly in the stone formation next to the path. A scenic and impressive forest formation.
You should definitely experience this little additional circuit between the Sängerwiese and the Wartburg.

My husband and I are often there. Beautiful place, this beauty can only be recognized by those who take their time. The rock walls seem to tell stories and every niche or grotto is a magical place. So, dear visitors, take your time and enjoy. It is worth it!!!!

The Elias Cave itself is rather less spectacular. The narrow root path there is always worthwhile, because there are several impressive rock formations around the small crevice!

For some time now, there has finally been an explanation of the Elias Cave. 💡
The Landgravine Elisabeth (1207-1231) cared for the poor and sick at the Wartburg, and later in a hospital at the foot of the castle. She gave them food and drink, sewed clothes for them and cared for them when they were ill.
According to legend, among them was a poor and sick man named Elias. Thanks to Elisabeth's caring care, he recovered. After his recovery, Elias lived for a long time in this cave, which is still named after him today, as a pious hermit. Many people who came to him saw Elias as a holy man. He urged people to fear God, comforted them in misfortune and warned against sin. (...from information board)
