There is a bench at the height of the mine. From there you have a grandiose view of the Eifel.
The approximately 23 hectare nature reserve is located on the western slope of the Raßberg. It is characterized by the montane juniper heather landscape, which consists of an almost typical heather landscape with extensive juniper stands. Special features of the flora and fauna are isolated calluna heath, local insects, field thrush, woodlark, goshawk, buzzard as well as roe deer, fox and hare. Numerous species of insects, including warty bites, spotted grasshoppers, and bluish hawk-clover, have been observed.
The area was placed under protection on April 25, 1966 by the Koblenz district government. The nature reserve is named after Dr. Heinrich Menke (1880 to 1956), a biology teacher from Koblenz who, in his role as state commissioner for nature conservation, also campaigned for the preservation of the juniper heaths.
